UPDATE (5/11/25)
Hailey has completed her degree at PCC. She is dating a wondeful guy from NY (who needs to be on this side of the country (hint hint). She is currently working at two libraries and is also works on occasion for the Beaverton School District. She continues to attend as many concerts as she can
UPDATE (11/28/18):
Hailey was just inducted into the National Honor Society. She is also active in dance, taking guitar lessons, and works at the local library, a job that stemmed from her years of volunteer work there. She has a year and a half of high school left, after which she will spread her wings and head off to college.
I have not been good about updating this page. Hailey is nearing the end of her second year of Summa. It has been challenging for her, but that is good. I would much rather see B's and a C or two and have her challenged than for her to get straight A's and not be challenged at all. She is reading books I never had to reader (Odyssey) and doing math (algebra this year) earlier than I did. She is a kind and caring person who believes in fair treatment for all regardless of labels (gender, skin color, gender identity, etc.). I could not be more proud of the young lady she is becoming.
Hailey has experienced a number of changes this school year. She currently has an orthodontic helix. In March, she will be getting brackets on her front teeth. This is her first round with braces, and we can expect another in the future. She has also gotten her first pair of eye glasses (she is slightly near-sighted like me), and she is now experiencing crisp, clear vision.
We recently got the results of her Stanford 10 test: of 190 questions, she got 187 correct. She has now been identified as TAG for both Math and Reading. She scored in the 99th percentile in reading and the 97th percentile for math. That should make her eligible for the Summa program in middle school, which is a program specially designed for the top percentage of TAG students. When the time comes, we will have to decide if that is a good fit for her. Once you are taken out of a classroom where you are one of the top achievers and put in a classroom with the other top achievers, it can be difficult if you are no longer at the top of your classroom. It's certainly something we will have to bear in mind.
Hailey has just begun fourth grade. As always, she is enjoying school. She enjoyed her summer softball league and learned a lot playing for The Wildcats. She is now enrolled in fall softball, and just had her first practice with The Blue Lightning. Practices and games will keep her Sundays busy for the foreseeable future. We are still waiting for her dance classes to start up.
Hailey has adjusted well to her new school. For the first month or two, when asked who she played with on recess, her answer was "myself." When asked if she had any friends, her answer was "I don't think so." She now knows several people and is doing quite well. She was retested for TAG as the school tests all students, and she tested gifted in reading. She is doing very well in math too, but she doesn't always read the question carefully (story problems) to make sure she is answering the correct question, so that is the area her teacher is going to focus on for her. She tested to become a member of the Bethany Math Club and was asked to join. They do Math Fax competitions once a month and she does very well at some difficult questions. The algebra is not a problem for her, and she is starting to learn division.
She is enjoying her new dance studio. She is taking ballet and Jazz/Hip-Hip. She is so graceful and naturally talented in ballet, but it is really fun to watch her hip-hop dances as well.
Hailey is doing well at multiplication. We have a conference with her teacher on Monday, March 29th. I have been trying to get her into the Ramona books by Beverly Cleary. Last night she wanted me to read her a bedtime story, so I chose to read a chapter in Ramona the Pest. Later, I discovered it was a 36-page chapter. Less than 24-hours later, Hailey has finished the 200+ page book. I am trying to prepare her for the Ramona & Beezus movie which comes out in June. Selena Gomez plays the role of Beezus.
We had Hailey tested for giftedness. As expected, she is gifted. I was expecting it to be in reading, where she is at the top of her class. However, it turns out that math is where she is gifted. The rest of her class is still working on addition and subtraction, but she has now started multiplication. She continues to enjoy dance, and is excelling in her two ballet and one tap class. She is so graceful and is a joy to watch
Hailey is enjoying 2nd grade so far. Her teacher is very friendly. She enjoys science very much, so she has been teaching her class all about the planets.
Hailey continues to love reading. They take a standardized test in Reading to determine if they are performing “at benchmark” (where they should be). They are expected to score at least a 40 right now and an 80 at the end of the school year. Hailey’s two test scores so far have been 118 and 110, well above grade-level.
We are currently trying to work with her teacher to find ways to challenge her and she will be tested sometime this fall for the Talented and Gifted Program.
